The Devil In Disguise Bad Things Book 1 edition by Cynthia Eden Romance eBooks

I wanted to like this book. Then I just wanted to get through it. I've thrown in the towel and I'm not even to the halfway point. The cover is great, the prologue started out strong. And then, she essentially castrated her main character. For the love of God, Luke is supposed to be the Devil and dangerous, etc. He's not. For those actually wanting to read this, I am trying not to give anything away. The girl, Mina, screws him over by trying to steal from him. In return he basically wants her to love him and want him. He's no more than a sexy rich guy with a paranormal quirk. He doesn't feel dangerous. I really wish I had taken the sample instead of outright buying the book based upon other people's reviews- which I now find kind of suspect. To the author, I'm sorry, it's not personal. I just really felt like you had a great story in the beginning. The prologue was great. The part in the bar was great. Then it really wasn't.

The Devil In Disguise Bad Things Book 1 edition by Cynthia Eden Romance eBooks Reviews

Luke Thorne lives in Key West, FL. He is immortal and keeps who he really is on the down low. He's at the bar having some drinks where he is approached by the most seductive woman he has ever seen, Mina. Mina approaches him like a woman who knows what she wants from a man and she wants Luke to take her to his secret island. Luke is in! She seems to be acting rather peculiar, but he doesn't have time to concern himself with that.

Mina needs Luke, or more precisely, she needs something Luke has. She has been looking for him for five years. He has something she needs, and she knows who he really is. With the power of her voice, she is going to use him to get it so that she can escape the man who is chasing her and will not let her be.

For a relationship that starts with a lot of subterfuge, there is an instant connection between Mina and Luke. The fact that she is trying to control him is problematic, but as time passes, Luke is someone Mina CANNOT control. Luke commands the dark world, his twin brother the light. They are doomed to fight each other to the death at some point, but Luke isn't in a rush to do anything. The fact that Mina tried to control him is infinitely more interesting to him. And oddly enough, he wants to help her. Can Mina accept his help?

Mina doesn't know why she has power with her voice. She has to use caution with everything she says for fear she will cause someone to do something unintentionally. This "power" she has has caused her nothing by trouble in life and is now leading to her being hunted. Luke is possibly more dangerous to her than those she is fleeing, but there is an attraction there. Dare she trust him?

I love devilish men. Luke is entertaining and Mina, for all that she's rather damsel-in-distress-y, is very likable and relatable. She's be dealt a pretty crappy hand and she's trying to do something about it. Just so happens she meets Mr. Tall Dark and Handsome along the way. This is definitely a good romance.
Overall Opinion Hmmmm....well I tried another pnr romance book, and I'm still not convinced that I even really like the genre. It's not that I struggled with the idea of pnr creatures or the world or anything in this one, but it more about the lack of connection I felt between the characters. I didn't understand the progression from lust to love at all. I understand that lots of other stuff was going on, but I didn't feel like the connection was given enough attention. Like with suspenseful romance books I've read in the past, the balance between the focus being on the suspense/pnr and other events vs. the romance is important to me. I didn't feel like this one was well balanced. I am bummed about that because Cynthia Eden has done well with that for me in some of her other books. I'm sure I'll try another pnr romance again sometime when I'm wanting to step outside my box, and hopefully it'll work out better for me...

Brief Summary of the Storyline This is Mina and Luke's story. They meet at a bar one night and they are instantly connected. Luke is the "Lord of the Dark", and Mina is a siren and searching for something in his possession that would take her paranormal powers away because she is tired of hurting people. Mina's ex is looking for her and wanting to use her powers as a weapon like the other pnr creatures he and his government agency have captured. There are some suspenseful moments, some sexy times, and some sweet moments...and they get a HFN ending.

POV This alternated between focusing mainly on Mina and Luke in 3rd person narrative (some side characters too).

Overall Pace of Story Good. I never skimmed and I thought it flowed well.

Instalove Kind of. I didn't understand the progression into stronger feelings, and that might be because I didn't really feel their connection overall.

H rating 4 stars. Luke. I liked him. I did have a little bit of confusion because he didn't seem all that "bad" to me.

h rating 4 stars. Mina. I liked how she was good and tried to help everyone including Luke.

Sadness level Low, no tissues needed

Push/Pull Yes, but mild.

Heat level Good. They have some good tension, chemistry, and scenes -- but not so much it takes away from the story.

Descriptive sex Yes

OW/OM drama Yes

Sex scene with OW or OM No

Cheating No

Separation Yes

Closure This didn't have as much closure as I wanted, but I would call it a HFN ending
This book was a lot of fun reading. I laughed on the inside as much as out loud. The Devil falling in love? Really? Yeah, there were those moments, the moments of tenderness, spoken or thought, words of tenderness only Cynthia Eden can make you believe. At the end of the story the mermaid got her devil. I'm warming up to Leo, seems the time he's spending with his brother is enlightening him that all is not well in his Dominion. From one page to the next there was something going on with the crazy bunch of characters. The Devil In Disguise is a good read because it strikes a balance of what you would expect in any book except with strange quirks and characters and I could not put it down. . Remember Eli the bartender? Who knew he had spiders that came off of him when he was threatened. Otherwise pretty good bartender it seemed. From page one I was hooked until the end wearing a smile all the way through The Devil In Disguise. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND READING THE BOOK.
