When Maisie Peterson leaves university in 1977 without a job to go to, she decides to help her mother save her large and impractical country property in the wilds of rural Dorset by trying her hand at self-sufficiency. Ma is just a tad eccentric, though, and Maisie has no clue about farming. Her efforts are thwarted at quite a few turns by a flock of willful sheep, a dotty aunt, a charming but ineffective boyfriend and a swarthy, but highly desirably agricultural auctioneer. Emily, the ewe, runs rings round her while Ma drifts in and out of the scene in an ancient wedding dress, causing havoc in Maisie's attempts to sort out her personal as well as her agricultural problems.

I’ve read most of Valerie’s books and so far, for me, this is the best. Five stars is simply not enough – it doesn’t come close.
I laughed out loud, giggled, gasped, smiled (and tried to sympathise, but it was just too funny!). What I adored about this book is that I looked forward to it every day. I thought about the eccentric characters, the twists where you thought a visitor was doing one thing – but actually it was something very different. I did not want it to end.
To me, a mark of a good book is knowing exactly where you were when you left it last (even if it was a few days or a week or so), you can just pick up the book without flicking back and instantly return to the folds of a wonderful story.
With characters I adored instantly, a lightness, and just plain old fashion good story telling – I cannot recommend this book enough. It’s a keeper and I shall be reading it many more times.
Congratulations Valerie.

Step back into the 1970s and follow along with Maisie as she dives into country living and begins a small farming enterprise on a large, undeveloped property in the lush rural landscape of Dorset. An eccentric mom, a boyfriend who loves photography and a clueless WWOOF inductee are in the mix of rich characters along with her small menagerie of sheep, geese and chickens. Can she tame the land and manage to make a living with the help of a few savvy friends?? Although the story is not set in suburbia by any means, it made me think of the classic British TV series from the 70s, The Good Life (a/k/a Good Neighbors). It is well written and a fun read.
This is without a doubt one of my favourite books – it is a real charmer, and I loved it.

There is a whole host of truly wonderful characters and supporting characters that helped shape this story and paint it in bright multi-coloured layers and they all had me laughing out loud at their antics.

Maisie, our heroine, armed with a hard-earned university degree decides to rather try her hand at farming instead, and sets out to do so with hilarious consequences. Her eccentric mother, who lives in a world of her own thinks nothing of wearing her ancient wedding dress to help mend fences on the farm or to wear her moth eaten cocktail dresses or ball gowns around the house. I adored her.

Maisie’s photographer boyfriend started off as quite a bland character, but he is proof that if you hang around people who are eccentric, or even just slightly eccentric, it may just rub off on you. He is as clueless as Maisie is about farming and doesn’t show much interest, but between the two of them they came up with the most bizarre of all schemes involving runaway sheep. So funny )

What is a farm without animals? This farm had the best animals ever. There is Emily, the ewe, who was constantly scheming and leading everyone else astray, to Wellington the charming little ram ……… who rammed, and Miss Gee, the goose who terrorises everyone – there was enough craziness on this farm to keep you entertained forever.

This was an excellent read, and is one of those books that will stay with me for a very long time. Great characters and great story. I loved it.
I thoroughly enjoyed this humorous book by writer Valerie Poore. I liked the characters and thought the writing was exceptional.

Everything about this fun read worked for me. The dialog worked well, the situations the characters got into were funny and realistic, and the description of the English countryside transported me there.

This is one of my favorite paragraphs from this book
“The more I tried to prise old handles, blades and tines apart, the more I felt like an apprentice contortionist. Or perhaps a second Houdini. As soon as I’d got one bit free of another, then another part would get trapped in, under or between something else, and I found myself getting wedged awkwardly between uncooperative chunks of steel and being painfully poked in places I wouldn’t even want to mention.”
I'm a big fan of Val's books. I first met her Faring Through France on a Shoe, and that led me to her Watery Ways and African Ways books, which I loved. They are all memoirs; but this is the fictional story of Maisie, and her wonderfully eccentric family and friends. Ma is a delight, as are Jeanie, Mags and Simon. And the animals! Such characters! Emily and Wellington the sheep are brought to life perfectly, with their supporting cast of lambs, geese and chickens. Maisie has just left university, and doesn't plan to settle down on a smallholding in deepest rural Dorset. And she knows nothing about raising sheep, and not a lot about keeping ponies. But this is what fate has in store for her. Written in Val's usual humorous style, this is such a delightful book. She really understands how to develop characters, whether human or ovine. And the storyline will keep you spellbound to the end. Just buy this book - you'll love it!!
Authentic likable characters are well woven into Valerie Poore’s book, How to Breed Sheep, Geese and English Eccentrics which made for a delightful, fun read. Rarely do I laugh while reading a book, and can unabashedly admit I did with this one. The mark of a good writer is determined in the reaction of the reader the interest in and emotional response to the characters, the storyline, etc. It’s not unusual for me to get pissed off at a character but to smile and want to return to the page for more entertainment is a rarity. And to that effect I praise this author’s writing. Being half-English and having a great love for the English countryside and large rolling country estates and farms, I was particularly enamored with the settings that moved the whimsical story along. Much has already been written and I am not particularly fond of retelling the story in reviews. What is important to me, and I would well assume any reader, are two factors did the book entertain and/or did it teach me anything? A clear yes to the entertainment and perhaps a sweet yes to the later for with the virtue of storytelling comes the lessons a reader subjectively garners and there was nothing remiss here. A truly enjoyable experience and for that I thank the author.
