I can say this about the book: wonderful world building. The devil's in the details and the details were just right. I was enthralled right off. Something about the beginning captured me and h or me through the first 80 or so pages. Unfortunately, I just wasn't thrilled with the characters. The love interest? Boring. In fact I wish that had all been skipped--and I like love stories. I just never felt the pull to him. He feels like a paper cut out, flat and colorless. I kept hoping for someone else to show up and blow him out of the water, so to speak. Sadly, I remain disappointed. None of the secondary characters really stood out. In fact, I can't recall anyone's name except Degoba without seriously trying to remember. So it was a disappointing cast. Shimmer. I liked her somewhat initially but for a dragon she was...blah is the best word I have for it. She was we as kind I don't associate that with dragons, especially ones who survived what she did. She's too eager to please for a centuries old adult. Her puppy eyes at her love interest make you wonder if you are reading a tween romance. I didn't buy that she could hunt animals and eat on the hoof but freak out over destroying an evil creature and sit uselessly in shock. I just couldn't buy into the character and her contradictions. I left the novel disappointed, having skimmed the last 170+ pages, and thinking Shimmer's past was way more interesting than her present. I am still on the fence on if I will try book 2. If this Alex relationship keeps going, then definitely not.

Ms. Galenorn has created such a wonderful world in the new Fly by Night series that it seems like you can almost feel the mist, touch the trees, and see the ghosts and spirits that haunt Washington.

Shimmer is a Blue Dragon who has been sent Earthside to serve out her time for trying to steal from her betters. She can only shift into her dragon form while completely submerged in deep water.

Alex Radcliffe, gorgeous vampire and owner of Fly By Night Magical Investigations, is her new boss. They are asked to investigate a haunted B&B in Port Townsend by Alex's friend, Patrick. Violent things have been occurring and he cannot possibly open the doors until they can figure out what is causing all of the trouble.

Loved this first book in the series. Great fun.
Guess I should admit that Yasmine Galenorn is one of very few authors that I MUST pre-order! Love her Otherworld series and prayed that this new series would keep me reading all hours, day and night, just like Camille, Delilah and Menolly keep me up way past bedtime. Flight From Death did not disappoint.

Our heroine, Shimmer, is a blue dragon who has been exiled Earthside for five years for crimes in the Dragon Reaches, and she must now work for Alex Radcliffe, vampire and owner of Fly By Night Magical Investigations Agency.

In this first novel, Alex is contacted by an old friend, Patrick Strand, who has purchased a home in Port Townsend and has converted it into a B&B. However, he is unable to open for business because it appears to be haunted and something (ghosts?) create havoc and destruction whenever he gets close to opening. Patrick has asked Alex to come to solve the problem.

Shimmer, Alex and werewolf Ralph, a computer whiz/employee, head for Port Townsend to drive out the ghosts and enable Patrick to open. Once they arrive, however, they learn that nothing is simple. Ghosts would be a blessing compared to the real threat, and the chances of surviving the ensuing mayhem becomes less and less as the investigation goes on.

They enlist the help of a local witch and a Native American that Shimmer suspects is a shaman, and hope that they can eradicate the menace that they discover. I don't want to have to do a spoiler alert, so...

Let's just say that I am really glad that I pre-ordered, and I'm looking forward to many more adventures with Shimmer, Alex and this group. I'm worried that my Otherworld books may be numbered, and at least this series will make it hurt less when Camille, Delilah, Menolly and their friends are settled in and have no more stories to tell. Good books are like good dogs, I love them so much, and it hurts way too much when they leave. Fingers crossed that Shimmer and friends don't leave soon.
